We absolutely love our Orpingtons. We have several different color morphs including 'blue', 'splash', 'buff', and a combination of those. We researched all the breeds and decided to go with Orpingtons. They are docile, winter hardy, great mothers, good layers, and beautiful. We ordered 25 online and 1.5 years later, we still have 23 of those original hens. Our own dog turned into a chicken killer (we rehomed her)and a faulty timer (my programming error) led to the demise of another hen that did not return to the coop before the metal door closed.
They are free-range and have access to our 7.4 acres daily. We have the ability to pen them up but choose to allow them to forage. There is definitely a big taste/visual difference in the eggs we get from them and the store bought. Our large brown eggs are far superior and we attribute that to the wide range of forage they devour.
